2018 Elementary Summer Reading

 Dear Families,                     Click to view

The best way to become a reader is to spend time reading. Please continue to spend time each day reading while enjoying the summer. As you can see from the data below, spending just 20 minutes of reading each day will make a dramatic difference in your child’s success in school.

To help encourage your child, attached is a summer reading log. This log will help keep your child accountable for reading each day, this will also be a great way to show his/her new teacher all the reading s/he enjoyed over the summer. As your child finishes a book, please fill in the summer reading log . Please return the completed log to school the first week of school.  Also, enclosed is a list of suggested books for each age level as well as a summer reading challenge sheet that may be helpful in promoting reading.

For students who participated in Accelerated Reader this will be available to students over the summer. It is a great opportunity for students to assess their reading.

Suggestions to promote the power of reading:

  • Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program. This program encourages students to let books transport them to the most exciting destination of all: the imagination. Please visit the website https://www.barnesandnoble.com/b/summer-reading-for-kids/_/N-2mir Students that read eight books can return a completed journal to any Barnes & Noble bookstore to get a free book.
  • Visit Scholastic for book list suggestions https://www.scholastic.com/summer/home/
  • Visit your public libraries as they have wonderful summer reading programs.
